two cats on a bed

Everything is awful

Everything is awful. Here are some things that aren’t.

For starters, here are my cats. It’s my unbiased opinion that there still are not enough cat pictures on the internet. We have yet to reach peak cat-picture internet. So here is my contribution.

I want to point out that the black-and-white, Beezus, is the newer addition to the family. The other one, the big fluffy blob Bailey, is in this moment staring at her longingly. Bailey may be a Labrador trapped in a cat’s body. All he wants is to love you. And by “you” I mean Beezus. Though you can’t see it in this picture, he’s got an expression that screams “why won’t you love me?” And Beezus could give a shit. It’s a classic love story, and if anything changes (apart from his longing and her occasional smacking him across the head), I’ll let y’all know.

Why, you may be asking yourself, am I writing about my cats? As I said way back in February, my aim is to post at least once a week. I don’t have anything profound to say this week (or, more to the point, I didn’t take the time to figure out something profound to say), so to hold myself to my own unrealistic standards, you get cats.

But I figure the world could use more cats. Or, put a different way, everything is awful so here are two fluffy things that aren’t. Also, Beyoncé’s latest album dropped today, which I assume isn’t awful because, well, Beyoncé. And, in case that’s not enough, here’s a list of sixty-seven reasons to be optimistic about the future.

This list of reasons comes from my lovely and talented wife with whom, just yesterday as a matter of fact, I am celebrating fifteen years of wedlock. I can’t think of anyone I’d rather live through a global pandemic with. I remain madly in love with this woman.

The world is difficult and challenging and increasingly on fire and things we used to take for granted are daily threatened by fascism and greed and anger and stupidity. But if you’re reading this, you have survived. And, therefore, deserve any little bit of love and joy you can get your hands on.

I hope you take a day off this weekend. Find your family. Tell them you love them.
